New Media Cincinnati - greetings, thanks, and call for discussion topics

Hello all you New Media Cincinnati folks!

I hope that this message finds you well. I know we're all probably looking forward to the warmer, hopefully not as wet, spring weather.

First of all, thank you so much for being a part of the New Media Cincinnati group. I'm definitely impressed by the variety of gifted and talented folks I've had the chance to meet with over the past several months. For example, here are some folks who attended the last meetup in March:

At these meetups, we can always count on some great conversation. Lately we have also made some time for focused discussion around a particular topic or event. I remember when Cliff Ravenscraft recorded a live Podcast Answer Man episode, showing the group how he produces one of his podcasts:

At the recent March meetup we spent time talking about what Podcamp is and why someone would want to attend a Podcamp. We had Angelo and Heather Mandato from Columbus down to visit, and we talked about Podcamp Ohio, which will be June 28, 2008:

I like that these focused discussions/presentations usually last for about 15-20 minutes, so that we have ample time for other great conversations. It would appear that the group feels the same way. The great thing about these focused discussions is that it gives us a chance to practice our presentation skills and in general learn something new.

So, let me open it up to you. What topics would you like to see discussed at future meetups? Remember that the group is not just about podcasting (although many of us are podcasters); we're all into new media and social media and how it's being used in our lives, whether for business or even just as a hobby.

Also, if you would like to present on something, let me know. And if you'd like someone in the group to present on something, let me know.

Finding Tables for Employee Census Report

This is one of the posts where I describe the more technical aspects of a project I've been working on. The contents here are meant mainly to trigger my own memory when needed in the future.

The HR department has requested a census report so that the company can shop around for benefits with other vendors. In typical fashion, the information needs to be laid out in such a way that none of the "canned" reports from the business system will suffice.

I know where to get the demographic information (employee ID, client ID, city, state, zip, salary, etc.), but this is the first time I've had to track down information such as premium rates, employer contribution, employee contribution, and coverage tier.

I sat with the HR director to find out where she's able to see this information. Back at my desk, I launched a SQL Server Profiler Trace, filtering to my login ID and session ID. Then I navigated to those same screens to help identify which objects in SQL Server I need to look at.

From there I've been able to target the specific tables I need for my SQL scripts.

This is an informal meetup for people in the Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Dayton areas involved with or who have an interest in new media (podcasting, video podcasting, blogging, Facebook, Twitter, social networking, etc.).

Everyone is welcome to come.

The restaurant management has reserved the meeting room for us and politely requests that the group collectively spend at least $25 while we're there. I don't think this will be a problem.

The store has free wi-fi, so feel free to bring your recording equipment and laptops.

Open-ended questions about my blogging approach

While driving into work this morning, I began thinking about how I'm using this blog and blogging in general. I came up with some open-ended questions for myself, none of which I'm able yet to answer.

• What ways can I merge my social media/new media passion with my job as a SQL developer into a career?
• What purpose do I really want this particular blog, to which I've assigned my name, to have?
• Should I separate the new media stuff on this blog from the technical stuff?
• How easy is it for someone looking at my resume to to really see what I'm about? Are folks finding the content I want them to find over here?
• Why do I have and maintain so many blogs? Would it be worthwhile to consolidate and/or "shut down" one or more of them?
• Is Blogger the tool I want to continue to use for my online presence, or is it worthwhile to move it to another blogging platform?
• How can I best communicate the technical aspects of my work in a way that is easy for someone to understand? Do I do this for myself mainly, or do I do this to inform others, too?

Your use of social media may vary - and that's okay

I was chatting with someone yesterday about how encouraged I am about being able to reconnect with family members (aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, etc.) - near and far. Of course I would love to connect with them on every social network in which I participate. Yet I have to recognize that there are several that don't even have access to a computer. Or, as one uncle said, "I can't even remember my email address!"

That's true for a lot of people in general. The new media playground consists of numerous tools, websites, and the like. While some people are early adopters of social media tools and new media technologies, others prefer a slower approach. It may take many months or years before someone close to you decides to get on email or start writing a blog, let alone record a podcast or even join a social media network.

Another interesting dynamic in social media is the idea of being connected to many people or just a few. Some people want to be connected to a few people with whom they can build close relationships; others like to be connected to everyone; still others choose somewhere in between.

I used to be critical of one approach over the other, but I realize that each serves a purpose. I can appreciate that people like Chris Brogan, Christopher Penn, Robert Scoble, and Mitch Joel have decided to be super-connectors. I also can appreciate that Clarence has decided to connect with only a handful of people. I myself have opted for somewhere in-between.

Some folks like to be connected to others all around the globe, while others prefer to remain local. The same can be said among certain user groups, such as podcasters, bloggers, people looking for jobs, others in the same industry, and so forth. You find all kinds in social media.

As we play in the new media playground, I strongly believe it's important to let others play as they like and be ready to help others try out something new - if and when they ask.
